Acting on Camera and Alza's Tools class
This class is designed for students who have little to no formal acting training. Actors are guided through an introduction to the craft, as well as an overview of acting on camera. Focusing primarily on scene study, these classes (intro, intermediate and advanced) reveal a specific method of acting for the camera tailored by the founder of Alza Acting Studio. We also use elements from the techniques of Meisner, Chekhov and Stanislavski.
In addition to covering movement and voice, this class teaches you how to:
- break down scenes and monologues from theatre, film and television script
- be present and to work objectives and actions
- make strong choices in interpreting lines
- understand “tempo-rhythm” – its meaning, purpose and application
- train the body for scenes
- understand “line of movement” – in long, medium and close-up shots.
- Character Development
- Text & Script Analysis
- Students are also given the opportunity to review their progress on a large screen.

The Craft Class
Actors learn by doing. Throughout the journey of this class, actors have the opportunity to practice different tools to improve their personal craft.
With a lot of hard work, focus and determination, students learn how to develop a character that can compete with the next person who walks in the audition room or on set. Using tools from various techniques that have been in use for hundreds of years and Alza's own work, which covers more than two decades, is incorporated into the classroom work, with the result an organic approach for each learner: inner dialogue, energy and instincts and bio mechanics come together to take everyone a step beyond. This class goes back to basics, with a focus on making your instrument work for you and working to create a new person who may not be exactly who you are, but was nevertheless birthed by you. Your instrument is your body, soul and voice. (no audits)

Shakespeare Classes
This intensive study of Shakespeare plays and the Sonnets takes close account of the social and political circumstances in which they were written and performed. This broad historicist approach is complemented by a strong emphasis on the diversity of twentieth-century critical responses to the plays and on modern productions of them, both on stage and on screen. The course will develop your knowledge of the range and variety of Shakespeare’s dramatic and poetic work; examine how its reception and status has been shaped by cultural and institutional factors; and explore themes such as questions of genre, politics, sexuality and gender.
